University of Oxford terrorism expert Dr Jonathan Leader Maynard believes terrorism in western Europe is, in a sense, becoming the new normal.

In an extended interview with Jonny Gould, he told talkRADIO listeners terrorism is a threat that will never reduce to zero.

"What we can do of course is to minimise that threat, to protect our society as effectively as possible and to try and really counter the root causes of this problem so that it doesn't increase in regularity," he said.

He noted that last year was the most deadly year on record for terrorism, and until 2012 terrorism was decreasing.

Dr Leader Maynard also said the attacks are an attempt to increase tension between Muslims and non-Muslims in the west.
