A man has been picked up in the Channel after trying to reach the UK in an inflatable kayak.
The man was a resident of the former Calais Jungle, which has now been demolished by the French authorities. It's believed he made it to within eight miles of the coastline before a vessel from the UK border force was dispatched and picked him up
It is understood he immediately claimed asylum in what's believed to be the first incidient of a sole attempted crossing of the 20-mile channel.
He's now being detained at an immigration centre in Croydon and is being dealt with by immigration officers.
