Catalan independence: Reports of dispute among Catalan lawmakers on eve of declaration

Tuesday, October 10, 2017

There are reports of a raft between lawmakers in Catalonia on the eve of the country's putative independence declaration.

Carles Puigdemont, the Catalan regional president, was due to speak at 5pm GMT (6pm local time) and had been tipped to declare secession from Spain.

However the press conference has been delayed over an hour, with speculation that Puigdemont has been locked in an argument with representatives of the left-wing CUP movement.

It is even being reported that Puigdemont does not want to declare independence, and is being pushed to do so by CUP leaders.

Spain has repeatedly said that last Sunday's referendum, and by extension Catalan independence, is illegal.

However Puigdemont has insisted he will honour the result of the referendum, which returned a 90% majority in favour of independence.
