Sturgeon has met to make a statement in reaction to Catalonia's independence declaration

Nicola Sturgeon has been urged to make a statement

SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon has been urged to recognise Catalonia in the wake of the Spanish region's declaration of independence this afternoon.

Scottish separatists have been calling on their leader to speak out in support of Catalan independence, as they believe the two causes are clearly and inextricably linked.

Sturgeon has been accused of mixed messages on Catalonia in recent times, given her support for both self-determination and the European Union - which has already said it will not recognise the Catalan republic.

Leanne Wood, leader of Plaid Cymru, has already called on the Welsh Assembly to recognise Catalonia. However, at the time of writing Sturgeon has yet to make a public statement on the matter - and people are getting restless.
