Celebrities backing Extinction Rebellion call themselves 'hypocrites'

Celebrities have addressed accusations of hypocrisy

Wednesday, October 16, 2019

More than 100 high profile names have signed an open letter admitting they are "hypocrites" for supporting the Extinction Rebellion movement.

Celebrities including actors Jude Law and Benedict Cumberbatch, musician and campaigner Bob Geldof and Spice Girl Mel B, all signed the note addressed to “journalists who have called us hypocrites”.

The letter says: “You’re right. We live high carbon lives and the industries that we are part of have huge carbon footprints.

"Like you - and everyone else - we are stuck in this fossil-fuel economy and without systemic change, our lifestyles will keep on causing climate and ecological harm."

However, the letter goes on to defend their involvement in the campaign against climate change, saying there is a “more urgent story that our profiles and platforms can draw attention to”.

It continues: “Life on earth is dying.  We are living in the midst of the sixth mass extinction.

“The stories that you write calling us climate hypocrites will not silence us.”

Many of the signatories have been seen attending the protests, which were banned in the city of London on Monday night.

The Metropolitan Police said banning the protests was a proportionate response because of the “ongoing serious disruption to the community” caused by the demonstrations.

More than 1,600 people have been arrested in connection with the rallies, which are calling for immediate government action on the “climate crisis”.
