Serial killer Charles Manson is alive, a California corrections official has confirmed.

Manson, who orchestrated the killings of a number of murders in the late 1960s, was reportedly taken to hospital in a critical condition on Tuesday.

However a statement from the Corcoran state prison has dismissed reports that the former cult leader has died.

Manson, who established his cult in California in 1967, is serving life in prison for orchestrating the murder of US actress Sharon Tate and six others in 1969.

He was originally sentenced to death but the sentence was commuted to life in prison following the abolition of capital punishment in California in 1972.
