China has claimed that its astronauts will be on Mars in just four years.

The country also wants to land on the dark side of the moon in two years' time, according to the Daily Star.

On Tuesday Wu Yanhua, deputy chief of China's National Space Administration, said that Beijing aims to launch its first Mars probe around 2020.

The probe will be used for orbiting and roving exploration.

He added: "Our overall goal is that, by around 2030, China will be among the major space powers of the world."

The Chinese also hope to create a 20-tonne space station and are developing relations with international space agencies.

China did not send its first satellite to space until 1970, however since 2003 its asrronauts and scientists have completed a space walk, launched a space lab and put a rover on the moon.
