Christine Jardine: 'Simple solution to Brexit is to cancel it'

Friday, August 2, 2019

Lib Dem MP Christine Jardine came to blows with talkRADIO’s Mike Graham for claiming the "simple solution" to Brexit is to cancel it.

Her comments came in the wake of the Liberal Democrats winning the Brecon and Radnorshire by-election by 1,425 votes, cutting the Conservative majority to just one.

Ms Jardine said the victory showed “people do not want what they’re getting from this Conservative government".

“The fact of the matter is there are problems that we are now coming across, economic problems, medical problems, farming problems, all sorts of problems,” she argued.

Mike confronted her, saying: “But they all have solutions and your job as an MP is to find solutions not to find problems.”

Ms Jardine responded bluntly: “There is a solution, it’s simple: we don’t leave the EU.”

She warned that the country is now in a “very dangerous economic and social position because of the austerity created by Brexit".

When challenged that Brexit is what people voted for, the Edinburgh West MP likened the situation to saying no when her child asked to do things that she considers dangerous.

Mike hit back: “So now you’re moving the argument from everyone who voted to leave is a racist bigot, to everyone who voted to leave is like a child who doesn’t understand anything?”.

“No, people voted leave for different reasons and they’re entitled to do that but what we are entitled to do now is say, look at the mess that this is creating for the country. Do you still want to do it?” she hit back.
