An Essex paedophile who reportedly filmed himself abusing children has been jailed for nearly eight years, after admitting a string of child sex offences.

Colin Hodgson, of Boxted, appeared at Chelmsford Crown Court on Friday January 5, after pleading guilty to five counts of sexual assault on a child under 13, three counts of causing or inciting a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity and three counts of making indecent images of a child.

The 61-year-old, who ran his own management consultancy and volunteered at the local British Legion, received 42 months in prison for each sexual assault on a child, three six-year and six-month sentences for causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, to run concurrently.

He also received three jail sentences for making indecent images - two of 12 months and one of 16, again to run concurrently - and was handed an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order.

On Tuesday, November 7, at 5.55pm, police carried out a warrant at Hodgson’s home after he accessed indecent images on the internet.

Police seized computers and devices and found images and videos involving under-age children. Hodgson was then arrested when a second warrant was executed on Friday December 1.

During the trial, the prosecution said:

“Around Christmas 2016, the victim’s grandmother disclosed to a social worker that the defendant had asked the victim if she wanted to have a bath with him.

“He was arrested and a number of devices, two laptops and two hard drives, were seized. The majority of the images were of very young girls, many of whom were under the age of three years old. There were also images of the victim being touched by an adult hand and also touching her vagina with a vibrator.

“The victim was as young as 18 months in some of those images.”

Following the trial, Investigating officer Bethany Beeton said: “Tens of thousands of images and a number of videos were found on Hodgson’s devices with a large majority of them being category A, the most serious category.

“As the Police Online Investigation Team went through each image and video, it became clear Hodgson had photographed himself taking advantage of a child, sexually assaulted them and caused them to engage in sexual activity.

“Hodgson has shown no remorse for his actions and I believe our communities are safer places with him locked in a prison cell.”
