A couple were in for a shock when they bought a bag of spinach from a supermarket in Maryland, as it also contained a live scorpion.

Shanmukha Pranay Rajeev Jerripothula and Sri Sindhusha Boddapati purchased the bag from a Giant shop last week, according to UPI.

However, it wasn't until Monday (April 10) that the opened the Giant branded-bag, to discover a live scorpion in amongst the leaves.

Boddapati caught it in a bottle and told WRC-TV: "I saw something inside the bag crawling. I thought it was a cricket in the beginning, and then I noticed when it was [in] the bottle that it is a scorpion."

Her husband, Jerripothula, then took the bottle back to the shop to explain what had happened, and asked them to stop selling the spinach, fearing there could be more scorpions hiding in other bags.

The shop refused to take the spinach off the shelves when it was first asked by the customers, but six hours later when it was contacted by news reporters, the other packets of spinach were removed from the shelves.

Although the company has not issued a mass recall, a spokesperson for Giant Food said: "Customer satisfaction is our highest priority. We regret any inconvenience to our customer.

"We take the quality of our products very seriously, and we are following up with the supplier to take every step to ensure this isolated incident does not occur in the future."
