The man who created the, erm, interesting bust of Cristiano Ronaldo has bit back at critics, giving a rather unusual defence for his work.

Emanuel Santos made the bust of the footballer, unveiled in Madeira airport when it was rechristened Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport on Wednesday.

However the statue has received a torrent of mockery online, because it bears little resemblance to the superstar footballer. Some have even likened it to Sloth from the Goonies.

But Santos believes he has nothing to apologise for, telling critics "even Jesus didn't please everyone."

He added: "It's impossible to please both the Greeks and the Trojans.

"It's a matter of taste, it's not as simple as it sounds.

"I have seen works of other renowned artists go through similar experiences."

Santos also assured his critics that he used a picture of Ronaldo to craft the sculpture - after many people questioned whether he even knew what the footballer looked like.

Whether this will stop the social media titillation remains to be seen.
