A former head of Scotland Yard’s flying squad has told talkRADIO tasers are still the best means of controlling disorderly people, despite their role in the death of former footballer Dalian Atkinson.
John O’Connor said he still thinks tasers are “the best option” as the weapon was more “efficient” than alternatives.
Police used tasers on the former Aston Villa striker after receiving calls over his safety. Mr. Atkinson went into cardiac arrest while being taken to hospital in an ambulance and was confirmed dead in hospital shortly after he arrived.
Despite this, Mr. O’Connor said other possible deterrents, such as "beanbags that were fired from a shotgun", had been tested but “weren't considered to be as efficient as a taser."
"We live in an increasingly violent society," he added. "You've got to get somebody under control without causing them a great deal of harm.
"If you don't have a taser, are you going to have five burly police officers trying to control a guy? You're probably likely to cause more damage."
