The lawyer representing United Airlines passenger David Dao has said he requires reconstructive surgery after being thrown off a flight on Sunday.

The lawyer also said Dao will "probably" sue the airline over his brutal removal from the plane, which was caught on video and has since sparked a firestorm of protest.

The lawyer said Dao requires surgery after suffering concussion, a broken nose and two broken teeth after being thrown off flight 3411, to make room for United staff.

Attorney Tom Demetrio told reporters Dao was discharged from hospital on Wednesday and had been left "shaken" by the incident, according to The Independent.

Dao's daughter also said "my dad is a wonderful father. He has raised five great children who will go on to do great things.

"He is a loving grandfather. At the end of the day he is the person we are trying to protect and take care of."
