There is no chance of Nigel Farage agreeing to lead Ukip on a permanent basis, after new leader Diane James has stepped down.

That's according to Peter Whittle, Ukip group leader for the London Assembly, after James has resigned from leading the party after just 18 days.

Farage has agreed to lead the party on an interim basis after James' resignation, but Whittle, the Ukip culture spokesman, suggested there was little desire on Farage's part to make the arrangement permanent.

He told Julia Hartley-Brewer the pressure of leading Ukip is double that of other parties, adding "I think the chances of Nigel coming back are nil, I think he'd be the first to say that."
