Diesel car levy blasted as 'grubby tax grab' on drivers by MP Charlie Elphicke

Proposed diesel car tax is 'grubby tax grab' on drivers, says Charlie Elphicke MP

Diesel car drivers in London could see themselves hit with heavier surcharges

Wednesday, February 1, 2017

Lawmaker Charlie Elphicke has slammed Westminister Council for its proposed pan to combat the pollution caused by diesel cars.

Over the weekend, the Telegraph reported that the council planned to raise its parking surcharges for diesel drivers by 50%. The idea has also been raised by various other councils in the UK.

Elphicke, MP for Dover and Deal, told Julia Hartley-Brewer "it's incredibly unfair. A grubby car tax grab is not the answer [to the pollution problems facing London and the rest of the country].

"We need to consider how to get these cars replaced, how to persuade people to adopt newer electric cars. We shouldn't see it as an opportunity to impose more tax on people,

"The reality is that air pollution has nearly halved in recent years. There has been progress, but we need to do more, which is why we need to encourage ultra low emission cars.

"This is frankly an opportunistic tax grab by Westminister Council."
