Donald Trump has made it clear he still solidly supports Jeff Sessions as the controversy surrounding his connections to Russia grows.
The attorney general has been mired in scandal since it emerged - and was confirmed by a spokesperson - he'd met with the Russian ambassador last year, during the election campaign.
The Democrats have been calling for him to resign, claiming he'd lied under oath when he was asked about his connections to the country in the Senate during his confirmation hearing.
The embattled senator has now removed himself from an FBI probe into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and any matters to do with the campaign.
Speaking on Twitter, the president came to Sessions' defence and blasted the "witch hunt" surrounding the attorney general.
He said on the social network: "Jeff Sessions is an honest man. He did not say anything wrong. He could have stated his response more accurately, but it was clearly not intentional.
"This whole narrative is a way of saving face for Democrats losing an election that everyone thought they were supposed to win.
"The Democrats are overplaying their hand. They lost the election, and now they have lost their grip on reality.
"The real story is all of the illegal leaks of classified and other information. It is a total witch hunt!"
