Donald Trump has come out swinging as the scandal surrounding his son's meeting with a Russian lawyer continues, claiming he is the victim of "the greatest witch-hunt in political history."

Yesterday Donald Trump Jr released a trove of emails which revealed he met with a Russian lawyer last June, believing that she was an employee of the Kremlin.

The emails also show that Trump Jr said 'I love it' when told his Russian contacts had incriminating information about Hillary Clinton.

Many have called for Trump to be impeached, with some - including talkRADIO presenter Julia Hartley-Brewer - suggesting his relationship with Russia is beginning to look like treason.

But Trump has reacted with typical belligerence today, writing on Twitter: My son Donald did a good job last night.

"He was open, transparent and innocent. This is the greatest Witch Hunt in political history. Sad!"

The US President sent another tweet a few minutes later, which read: "Remember, when you hear the words "sources say" from the Fake Media, often times those sources are made up and do not exist."

The scandal is likely to rage for several more days, with Trump Jr admitting last night that he may have met other Russian representatives during the campaign.

Robert Mueller, the former FBI director leading an inquiry into Trump's relationship with Russia, reportedly wants to examine the emails released by Trump Jr as part of his investigation.
