Donald Trump is now calling for a special prosecutor to “investigate Hillary Clinton’s crimes”, he announced on Monday night in Ohio.
He claimed it is necessary to look into the foreign donations made to the Clinton Foundation during Hillary Clinton's tenure as US Secretary of State. Trump called the foundation "the most corrupt enterprise in political history", and said it "must be shut down immediately."
For many years critics have alleged that Hillary Clinton's involvement in the charity has posed a conflict of interest, and it has been reported that federal prosecutors are already conducting their own investigation into the foundation.
Hillary and her husband, former US president Bill, have denied any impropriety. Last week Bill Clinton claimed that if Hillary is elected the foundation will no longer accept foreign donations, and he will step down from the board of the global non-profit.
Now Trump's campaign team appears keen to make this a battleground election issue. However he suggested it would not be appropriate to involve the regular police in this matter, claiming the police force has “proven itself to be a political arm of the White House”, as it did not prosecute Hillary Clinton over emails sent from a private email server whilst in office.
