Donald Trump meets Pope Francis at The Vatican

The US President is on his first overseas tour

Wednesday, May 24, 2017

Donald Trump has met the Pope in Rome on the next stop on his tour.

The US president is taking his first trip overseas, having begun his tour in Saudi Arabia, before moving on to Israel

The two met behind closed doors in the Vatican, and although there are no planned joint appearances, Trump is also due to receive a tour of the Sistine Chapel.

The Pope and the President have had very public disagreements in the past.

During the US presidential campaign, Pope Francis criticised Trump's plans to build a wall along the border of Mexico, saying a person who thought about building such a boundary "was not a Christian."

Trump hit back by saying the fact he had voiced such sentiments was "disgraceful."

The US President will also meet the Italian Prime Minister later on Wednesday, before he continues on his tour with stopovers in Sicily and Belgium.
