An internet billionaire has been named as the benefactor behind a group dedicated to "sh*tposting" on behalf of Donald Trump.

Palmer Luckey, creator of the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset, has poured huge amounts of money into a group dedicated to creating internet memes against Hillary Clinton, according to the Daily Beast.

The group, Nimble America, was unveiled on a pro-Trump Reddit site called The Donald last week. It describes itself as a "social welfare non-profit" and says its mission is to demonstrate that "shitposting is powerful and meme magic is real."

Luckey, who sold Oculus to Facebook for $2 billion in 2014, describes himself as nothing more than a donor, however the Nimble America website lists him as a vice-president.

The website contains only a couple of news stories, one of which is about the danger of rape in Mexico, and a press release about the company's tax status, which includes the assertion that "Nimble America does not consider any of its activities to be “political.'"

The site also contains a mission statement, which claims America "has been let down by poor leaders who have abandoned American principles."
