Donald Trump's UN speech will only encourage North Korea to develop nuclear weapons, according to a politics expert who spoke to talkRADIO this afternoon.

Trump made an extraordinary speech to the UN General Assembly today, describing Kim Jong-un as "Rocket Man" and saying the US will have no choice but to destroy North Korea if threatened.

Dr Matthew Mokhefi-Ashton, of Nottingham Trent University, told Sam Delaney "If North Korea get to the point of saying 'maybe he does mean it', if I was North Korea, that would be more of an incetive to develop nuclear weapons than a reason to give them up."

The academic added that Trump's rhetoric was "just par for the course for him," adding that it "felt more like a campaign speech, that he was speaking to the people back home rather than the people of the world."
