Donald Trump’s speeches are not artful, but they are very effective, says speech compiler

Compiler of book ‘Speeches of Note’ Shaun Usher has said that US President Donald Trump’s speeches are “very effective” even if they are not eloquent.

Mr Usher told talkRADIO’s Eamonn Holmes: “There was a study done a couple of years ago that said his speeches are incredibly effective.

“They are not eloquent, they are not artful and they are not beautifully written because he just goes off course anyway.

“I don’t think he reads the script half the time but they are so effective because his language is so basic.

“He is speaking to part of the population that has never been spoken to before.”

He added: “When I started writing this book, I considered putting one of his speeches in it. Just because it is of note doesn’t mean it is a positive speech.

“There is something about his speeches that makes them very effective.

‘It is an incredibly hard thing to do’

Mr Usher described political speeches as “particularly difficult” because the speaker is trying to convince the population, they are “right”.

He said: “Political speeches are particularly difficult because you are trying to convince the population that what you believe in is right.

“That is an incredibly hard thing to do which is why politicians have speech writers.

“Obama is one of the best speech writers ever, but he has got a team of speech writers.

“Although he was very actively involved in the speech-writing as well.”
