A drug addict has been jailed for 12 years for mowing down a child actor and his aunt in a stolen car whilst being pursued by police.

In August last year, convicted car thief Joshua Dobby was out on licence when he drove the car into 10-year-old Makayah McDermott and Rosie Cooper, aged 34, as they walked along a road in Penge, south London.

At the time, Cooper had been taking Makayah and other children for ice creams in the park. Dobby was driving a black Ford Focus at three times the speed limit down one-way roads.

Dobby, who had 53 convictions dating back to the age of 13, went straight through red lights before losing control and crashing into the group. He leapt out of the wreckage and fled on foot, leaving police officers trying to save the victims.

Sources revealed the driver had a cocktail of drugs in his system when he killed Makayah and Cooper, including cocaine, heroin and morphine.

However toxicology tests were unable to establish whether he was under the influence of drugs, only that he had used them previously, the court heard.

Dobby admitted causing death by dangerous driving and injuring Makayah's sister, but only entered guilty pleas to the more serious charges of manslaughter days before his trial was due to start.
