An off-duty police officer was detained after he knocked a woman unconscious and tried to stab a man at a party.

The officer allegedly became angry during an argument on Saturday (June 24) in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.

It is claimed that the 46-year-old pushed a woman to the floor, causing her to bang her head and lose consciousness.

She was then taken to hospital, according to The Local, before her attacker allegedly picked up a butter knife and attempted to stab another party-goer in his stomach, although this man suffered only superficial wounds.

More violence followed, as it is claimed that another guest then injured the off-duty police officer by hitting him on the head with a glass bottle.

A police report says the off-duty officer insulted and threatened colleagues who had arrived to restore order.

He was released after a night in custody, and police from Monchengladbach are reviewing the incident to ensure an impartial investigation follows.
