The Liberal Democratas claimed a huge surge in membership today as Remainers flocked to Tim Farron's party after Theresa May's election announcement.
The party, which currently has only nine MPs, gained 2,000 new members in just three hours, according to the Huffington Post.
Sal Brinton, president of the Lib Dems, said the surge in membership was due to the fact that “the Liberal Democrats are seen as the real opposition to this Conservative Brexit Government”.
Lib Dem leader Tim Farron has repeatedly pitched himself as the man to stop a hard Brexit, and he repeated the call today after Ms May announced a snap general election for June 8.
Farron said today: "This election is your chance to change the direction of our country.
“If you want to avoid a disastrous hard Brexit, to keep Britain in the Single Market, a Britain which is open, tolerant and united, this is your chance.
"Only the Liberal Democrats can prevent a Conservative majority.”
