Ecuador's Lenin Moreno set to win election despite fraud claims

The result means Julian Assange can breathe a little easier

Monday, April 3, 2017

The leader of the Alianza Pais party in Ecuador, Lenin Moreno, appears on course to win the country's election despite claims of fraud.

Moreno appeared to have emerged victorious after earning 51% of the vote, edging out opponent Guillermo Lasso.

However Lasso is contesting the result, citing irregularities.

The result means Julian Assange's residence at the Ecuadorian embassy in London is a bit more secure.

Lasso had previously promised he would ask the Wikileaks founder - who is fighting extradition charges to Sweden -  to leave because he was proving to be a hefty burden on taxpayers.

Authorities have appealed for calm while the remaining results are counted.
