An Egyptian woman has reportedly been assaulted by three men after refusing to hand over cigarettes for free.

Abir Ahmad Khalil runs the supermarket in Kafr El Sheikh Governorate which is north of Egypt where the incident took place.

The three men who are brothers had allegedly asked for cigarettes and the 37-year-old did hand them over, however the men then said they would not pay.

It is claimed Khalil then tried to take the packet back, but when she did so the three men started to beat her and also used wooden sticks against her.

The attackers also allegedly smashed up part of the supermarket, Al Arabiya English reported.

The woman's brother-in-law, who also owns the shop, is said to have taken her to hospital and informed police of the attack.

One of the three alleged attackers has been arrested after being identified by the shop owner but the other two are still at large.

Medical records from Sidi Salem Hospital show that the woman's eyes were swollen and she also sustained multiple bruises and injuries on her body. Her head was also cut in the incident.

Many in Egypt have posted on social media calling for the men to be arrested quickly while expressing sympathy for the woman.
