Of all the criminal stories you'll read today, this is almost certainly going to be the dumbest.

An axe-wielding man in Basildon, Essex robbed another man of his motorbike - before crashing it into a garden fence just a mile away.

The 21-year-old man of Merrylands, Laindon, has been charged with robbery, driving without a licence or insurance and possession of an offensive weapon and was booked to appear in Basildon Magistrates’ Court today (Monday, October 23).

Police received a call at 7pm on Wednesday, October 18, after a motorbike was stolen from an address off Worthing Road, Laindon.

The following day, the owner located his bike in Merrylands, Laindon, and as he began to push it away, was confronted by a man armed with a hand axe.

The suspect rode the bike away, only to crash into a garden fence in High Road, Laindon at around 3.20pm.

He fled the scene and later called an ambulance for injuries before being arrested.
