Entrepreneur Mark Zuckerberg is to invest a total of three billion dollars (£2,294 billion) to cure the world of disease.

The founder and CEO of Facebook and his wife, Priscilla Chan, will invest in research conducted by the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative as the next stage of their philanthropy efforts.

The couple aim to cure all diseases in the lifetime of their 10-month-old daughter, Max. Zuckerberg has said those behind the project are already "building a world-class engineering team", which will help scientists and medical experts conduct research into the world's various diseases.

In a statement, Priscilla said: "By investing in science today, we hope to build a future in which all of our children can build long and rewarding lives.

"This is about the future we want for our daughter and children everywhere. Together, we have a real shot at leaving the world a better place for our children than we found it."

The couple are renowned philanthropists, having given away 99% of their wealth in December 2015.
