A family were living in a house for two years, before reportedly discovering a dead body above the ceiling.

Local media says the family in Ruian, China, only discovered the dead man above the bathroom whilst cleaning.

The man who found the body allegedly noticed a cigarette lighter in between the ceiling panels and decided to inspect this by looking through a hole in the ceiling.

It was then that he is said to have seen the body, which was very decomposed, according to the South China Morning Post.

The man, thought to have been in his 30s when he died, was reportedly near a hole which had been created in a wall which linked to another section of the building.

Police believe it is likely he died in 2015 and had created the hole to escape from police as he had a history of drug abuse.

It is not yet clear how he died, but there are no signs of a struggle or that his body was hidden there on purpose, forensic experts have said.

The family have said the bathroom was rarely used as it was on the third floor and they hadn't noticed a smell coming from the room.

The man's father died last year, but had been searching for his missing son.
