A female suicide bomber has blown herself and her four-year-old daughter up during a police raid on an apartment in Bangladesh.

Officers believed the apartment on the edge of Dhaka was a den for a militant group, The Sunday Morning Herald reported.

Two women, believed to be married to members of the Jamaat-ul-Mujahedeen militant group, emerged from the building with their children and surrendered after the apartment had been cordoned off in the early hours of the morning.

However a few hours later another woman came out of the building with her daughter and let off two grenades. The woman was killed and the girl was injured by shrapnel.

Another suspected militant also set off grenades inside the apartment and killed himself.

Masudur Rahman, deputy commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said it was the first time a female militant had committed suicide by detonating explosives in Bangladesh.

The Government claims Jamaat-ul-Mujahedeen is responsible for much of the violence in Dhaka, but Islamic State and a local al-Qaeda group have claimed some responsibility for recent attacks on social media.
