A fire has broken out at the historic Notre Dame cathedral in Paris.

The cause of the blaze is not clear, but it is believed it began in the attic of the 850-year-old building.

Officials in Paris say the fire could be linked to renovation work currently being carried out at the cathedral.

Fire crews have confirmed a major operation is now underway to control the fire.

Footage of the blaze has been spreading online, with social media users expressing their horror at the scale of it.

Responding to the news online, singer Cher posted: "Am praying for Notre Dame."

US president, Donald Trump also shared his concern.

"So horrible to watch the massive fire at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. Perhaps flying water tankers could be used to put it out. Must act quickly!" he wrote.
