Firefighters in China had to rescue a 10-year-old boy after he was dangled from a balcony by his grandmother using a rope, according to local media.

The balcony was on the second floor of the building and it is claimed the boy was attempting to reach a blanket, which had fallen to the floor below.

Nantong Television said the boy had been able to reach the blanket but then had trouble getting back up.

There was no one in the flat below to help the child, so his grandmother contacted the management of the property, who then called the emergency services.

A spokesperson from the Qidong Binhai Fire Service reportedly said it took around 10 minutes to get the boy to safety and firefighters "tied a rope around the boy and put a helmet on him."

The South China Morning Post reported that the firefighter had to use a 15-metre ladder in order to help the child.

Authorities declined to name the family involved in the incident, but the spokesperson is said to have warned adults to take better care while looking after children when they are not in school.
