The first Hurricane Matthew-related death has been confirmed by officials in Florida.
A federal state of emergency was declared in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina as the storm closed in.
Hurricane Matthew has already ripped through the Dominican Republic and Haiti, killing more than 300 people, according to officials.
Reports claim around three million people in America were urged to evacuate and 420,000 have been left without power in Florida.
The storm is now category 3 and the the US National Hurricane Center said it could still be the most powerful storm to strike northeast Florida in 118 years.
