A flight was delayed for more than five hours after an elderly woman allegedly threw coins into the plane's engine for good luck.

The China Southern Airlines plane was scheduled to fly from Shanghai to Guangzhou, according to the South China Morning Post.

The aircraft was waiting at Shanghai Pudong International Airport when passengers told crew they'd seen a woman - believed to be in her eighties - throwing coins towards the engine from steps as she boarded.

A maintenance team was called to inspect the engine and nine coins were found within it.

According to reports, the plane's captain commented that the coins could have caused serious damage - or even engine failure - had they gone undetected.

China Southern Airlines has reminded passengers to comply with regulations and civil aviation laws.
