A US commentator has said it's time for the country to finally have a serious conversation about gun violence and stand up to the National Rifle Association, in the wake of the shooting in Florida on Valentine's Day.
Suspect Nikolas Cruz has admitted committing the massacre in Parkland, having appeared in court charged with premeditated murder. However political commentator John Micek agreed with Julia that there was a wider issue at play here.
Micek said he wanted to throw something at the TV when he saw House of Representatives speaker Paul Ryan saying this isn't the moment to discuss gun control measures, adding that it's ridiculous for Donald Trump to suggest this is a problem of mental health, rather than gun control.
Trump's stance, Micek said, is particularly damaging given that the President recently revoked an Obama-era rule that automatically added mentally ill people to the gun check database.
Micek added that, until America is willing to have a national conversation and "bucking the influence" of the NRA lobby group, the problem won't be resolved.
