A player for QPR FC Women has criticised the lack of availability of the Women’s World Cup collectable stickers.
Samantha Miller told talkRADIO’s Matthew Wright: “It is a shame because there is so much hype around this Women’s World Cup.
“It is amazing that young girls are so inspired by it. Things like collecting stickers are such an excitement.”
She added that it “sent out a message” if the stickers are not easy to find.
Tesco faced backlash after saying they were only stocking the stickers in its One Stop convenience stores because of “limited space”.
Sainsbury’s was also criticised for limited stock, despite a spokesperson saying the Women’s World Cup stickers were available in most stores.
This comes after a seven-year-old girl wrote an open letter to the two supermarket chains after she failed to find any Women’s World Cup stickers for sale.
Writing in her letter, Immy Masterson said: “I love football and I have been very excited about watching the Women’s World Cup. I was given the World Cup sticker book from my football club and was very happy to start collecting my stickers.
“I went to your supermarket today to spend my pocket money on the Women’s World Cup stickers but there wasn’t any there.
“Your store sold the men’s stickers, so why don’t you sell the women’s? Not having the women’s World Cup stickers is sending a bad message to girls everywhere that women are less important than men.”
QPR’s Miller said she used to collect men’s stickers when she was younger, so having women’s ones “makes a difference”.
“It gets people talking. If you are going to make stickers, then you need to sell them in the shops,” she said.
“Women’s football should not just be for girls. But, it is inspiring for young girls who want to play football to see the women’s team on stickers.”
