The incident happened outside Annabel's

A former billionaire has claimed he did not know that it is racist to call someone a "black ****."

Simon Halabi allegedly shouted "f**k off out the way you black ****," at refuse collector Carl Thomas outside Annabel’s in Mayfair.

Halabi said that Thomas had blocked his Bentley in with the rubbish truck. He also allegedly called him a "peasant" and a "monkey," the court heard, as well as throwing punches.

The court heard that he then shouted abuse at a passer-by who was black when he tried to intervene, The Sun reported.

Both Thomas and Halabi were arrested at the scene by police, however Thomas was released after questioning.

Halabi admitted using racial language when he was arrested, but also tried to convince police that it was not racist.

He denies one count of racially aggravated assault and one count of assault.

Halabi was at one time Britain's 12th richest man, before he declared bankruptcy in 2010.
