Two men are to be caned 85 times each in public after being convicted for having gay sex in Indonesia.

The punishment was handed down in the conservative province of Aceh, which passed a code of conduct inspired by Sharia law two years ago.

The pair - who were caught after activists broke into one of their homes, suspecting them to be gay - were convicted of liwath, or sex between men.

The 85 lashes imposed by the judge was a heavier sentence than what had been demanded by the prosecution, which called for the men to receive 80 each.

Aceh remains the only province of Indonesia which instills sharia-like punishments, which involve public caning for offences.
