The blogger behind the must-read Westminster blog Guido Fawkes believes George Osborne lashed out at Theresa May because he knows he missed his chance to be Prime Minister.
Yesterday it emerged Osborne had told colleagues at the London Evening Standard he wouldn't rest until May "chopped up in bags in my freezer". He has previously described the Prime Minister as a "dead woman walking" and likened her to a b-movie zombie.
Paul Staines told Julia Hartley-Brewer that Osborne and May have long been "open enemies", but this outburst is driven by thwarted person ambition.
Staines said "he must feel that when the Prime Minister Theresa May had such a disastrous election campaign, perhaps the party would have turned to him."
However, by the time of the election Osborne had already resigned as an MP, so there was no chance of his accession to the top job.
"She crumbled shortly after [he resigned] and he would have been there saying 'I told you so,'" Staines said.
"Him deciding to quit Parliament must be the motivation for a lot of the bile."
