An Islamist preacher from Germany has been sentenced to five and a half years in prison for supporting terrorism.
Sven Lau was convicted of four counts of supporting a foreign terrorist organisation on Wednesday (July 26), according to Reuters.
The prosecution claimed Lau funded and recruited people to join the insurgent group Jaish al-Muhajireen wal-Ansar.
It is listed as a terrorist group in Germany and it is thought that there are roughly 1,500 Uzbek, Chechen and Tajik fighters in the group.
The group previously pledged allegiance to the al-Nusra Front in 2015, which at the time was an affiliate of Al Qaeda.
Lau had also been seen in Wuppertal with eight others wearing orange vests which read "Sharia Police."
The prosecution claimed this was a recruitment effort for the terrorist group and was illegal.
Lau's defence had called for an acquittal whilst the prosecution claimed his sentence should be six and a half years.
