Grumpy Cat, the feline that was famous for permanently frowning, has died aged seven, her owners have said.

A statement said that the cat had died after “complications” from a recent urinary tract infection.

Grumpy Cat, whose real name was Tardar Sauce, gained celebrity in 2012 when photographs of her frowning expression were shared on social media.

Writing on Twitter, her owners said: “We are unimaginably heartbroken to announce the loss of our beloved Grumpy Cat.

“Despite care from top professionals, as well as from her very loving family, Grumpy encountered complications from a recent urinary tract infection that unfortunately became to tough for her to overcome.”

They added that the cat had passed away “at home in the arms of her mommy, Tabatha.”

The cat had since maintained her fame with television appearances and Madame Tussauds in San Francisco unveiled a waxwork of Grumpy Cat in 2015.

The cat had 1.5 million followers on Twitter, and more than 8 million followers on Facebook.

My fans shared their sadness at the news of the cat’s passing by creating memes of Grumpy Cat and posting them on social media.
