A gunman has been detained by police in France after he started shooting in a Marseille street.

French newspaper La Provence has described authorities deploying a special operation in order to remove the suspect from the scene.

It is thought that after shooting the man locked himself inside a building, according to Sputnik.

Local media reports a police source claiming it's unlikely that the incident is terrorist-related.

It is not clear what the man's motive was, but there are no reports of injuries or death as a result.
