Women across the world are boycotting Twitter for 24 hours in solidarity with an actress whose account was suspended after she sent a series of tweets about Harvey Weinstein.

Actress Rose McGowan had her account temporarily suspended after she made claims of sexual harassment against the Hollywood film producer.

After her account was suspended McGowan told her fans what had happened on Instagram, calling for them to be her voice.

Within hours of this declaration, #WomenBoycottTwitter was trending on the social network.

A number of celebrities have vowed to stay silent and not make twitter posts on the site, including Anna Paquin and Chrissy Teigen.

The action is to last the entire day of Friday (October 13).
