James Whale has paid tribute to Keith Chegwin and said there was a lot more to him than a "cheeky chappy" and he was a "deep person."
The TV star has passed away at the age of 60, his family have said. He had been battling with a long-term lung condition and died at home today (December 11).
talkRADIO presenter Whale, who worked with Chegwin on various occasions, told Sam Delaney: "He knew how to promote his personality and he did it very well.
"I think some people sometimes write him off, and wrote him off if you like, as being fairly sugary candy, not very deep. But he was quite a deep person and he had pretty strong political views.
"There was quite a lot more to him than cheeky chappy who ripped his clothes off for a TV quiz show.
"He not only was a hit of the 80s and 90s, he embraced new technology and he actually encompassed all those things you think a lot of the younger generation are doing.
"He was one of the few people I know that made money out of his stuff online."
Writer, producer and TV archivist Richard Wiseman also paid tribute to Chegwin. He said "it’s a sad day today" and "I saw that Danny Baker on Twitter had paid tribute to him, and referred to him as a fellow euphoric. That's probably the way to remember him."
