Labour politician and Hillsborough campaigner Steve Rotheram has won the Liverpool mayoralty, handing Jeremy Corbyn a timely boost after a series of disappointing local election results.y.
The former MP for Liverpool Walton - who has campaigned extensively for the Hillsborough victims and worked as Jeremy Corbyn's Parliamentary Private Secretary - has been nominated to the post.
He was elected with 59% of the vote, beating his Conservative rival Tony Caldeira.
The news comes amid a tough night for the Labour Party after losing over 200 seats thus far.
The Conservative Party have made considerable gains in the results, taking control over a number of local councils.
