A 21-year-old woman has revealed when her family found out she was dating a man from outside her culture, life at home was made a "living hell".
The woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, about her parents were not being pleased when they discovered she was in a relationship with someone from outside their Muslim culture.
She has recently moved away from home to escape the pressures and spoke to Jamie East and Saira Khan about her ordeal.
She explained she fell in love "but I knew from that moment I’d have to start living a lie, almost like a double life."
She told Jamie and Saira that her parents found out about the relationship which is "serious and we have every intention of staying together and being together for the long term" because "my phone just happened to be lying around."
But her parents, who were born in Britain like her, "really didn’t take it well" and "life at home once my parents had found out was living hell."
She revealed: "it was just constant arguments, shouting, screaming, we just couldn’t be on the same page." She claimed there were also "a lot of threats to tell extended family", which would mean "you’ve got the fear of being outcast."
The young Muslim woman said the situation has "made me develop sort of severe anxiety towards everything" and now "I’m always looking over my shoulder."
