A Madrid bank was the scene of chaos this morning as a hold-up escalated into a hostage situation.
An armed man took an unknown number of hostages at the branch of Bankia in Usera, a district of Madrid. The incident took place at around 9.50am local time (8.50pm GMT).
The robber, reportedly a man in his 60s, threatened the manager of the bank before bunking down with the hostages . Police officers rushed to the scene to attempt to calm him down.
The man has now been arrested and the hostages freed, and there are no reported injuries.
According to some reports, the robber was in his 60s, although details of his background are still emerging.
