Iain Duncan Smith has said there will be “not one single excuse” if the new government fails to deliver Brexit.
Yesterday Boris Johson announced who would be in his Cabinet, with a host of top jobs going to Brexiteers.
Iain Duncan Smith told talkRADIO’s Julia Hartley-Brewer that now Brexiteers “own Brexit”, they have “nowhere to hide".
He said: “We have to get this done, every single member of that Cabinet is on notice, there’s no question about that. They’re on notice to deliver and I say this genuinely and hopefully that they deliver.
“The answer to the question ‘What if they don’t?’, well it doesn’t matter after that because frankly I think the government itself, the party, will just simply go into meltdown.”
There were some surprises in Mr Johnson’s extensive government reshuffle.
His leadership rival, former Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt turned down the role of Defence Secretary and so returns to the backbenches today.
He will join the likes of Philip Hammond, Rory Stewart who announced their reisgnations when it was announced that Mr Johnson would enter Number 10.
“You can’t have a government made up of people who say ‘you know what, I’m not sure about that.’ People have to be certain this is right," Mr Duncan Smith continued.
“Otherwise, all that’s going to happen is you’re going to get rows, debates and people dragging their feet and you can’t afford that because we’ve got to be ready to leave and everybody’s got to do everything they can to make sure their area is ready – if necessary, with no deal.”
