An explosion has taken place at the Port Authority Bus Terminal in New York, and police say they are treating it as a terrorist incident.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) has said an "explosion of unknown origin" was reported at 42nd Street and 8th Avenue.

The NYPD has also said one man has been arrested and is in custory, however he is injured.

The suspect has now been identified as 27-year-old Akayed Ullah.

New York City Fire Department says a total of four people at the scene of the explosion at Port Authority have "non-life-threatening injuries". It originally said no-one apart from the suspect was injured.

The fire department has also called on the public to avoid the area.

Three subway lines have been evacuated due to the incident.

ABC News has reported that it is possible that a pipe bomb caused the explosion when it was detonated underground in a passageway. Reports from NBC News also claim a source said the suspect was wearing wires and and an improvised device.

Some reports claim the explosion happened earlier than planned and was supposed to inflict more damage.

Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the White House press secretary, has said that US President Donald Trump is being briefed on the explosion.
